This fraud has recently begun asking its intended victims to write a check and FAX a copy to them. This is apparently in the hopes that the U.S. Postal Inspectors office will not become involved in the invetigation and apprehension of the individual(s) responsible for perpetrating this fraud. However, even FAXing a check would still fall under U.S. Federal laws Title 18 - Chapter 63 - Section 1343 Wire Fraud.
